What Does an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Do? (AME Job Role)

An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) performs technical work at the skilled craftsman level, involving the repair, rebuilding, overhaul, maintenance, and servicing of aircraft operated by the Air Division. The role also includes mechanical repair and upkeep of accessories, hangars, base equipment, machinery, and ground support systems.

In addition to hands-on technical responsibilities, an AME undertakes supervisory duties, including planning work details, assigning tasks, and supervising and inspecting the work of a small team. Instructions are provided through oral or written directives, and work is primarily reviewed based on final results, reflecting the high level of trust and responsibility associated with the role.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities of an AME

• Executes and oversees the most complex assignments in daily aircraft maintenance and scheduled overhaul programs.

• Supervises and may direct the work of Air Mechanics and Trades Helpers.

• Inspects or directs inspections of aircraft and engines, including:

• Repairs, replacements, and system adjustments

• Examination of critical systems such as electrical, hydraulic, braking, propulsion, flight control, and float systems

• Performs and supervises metalwork, woodworking, painting, and welding related to aircraft structures and components.

• May be responsible for maintenance operations at main or secondary bases, with or without junior assistants under supervision.

• Prepares maintenance plans, technical sketches, material estimates, and time schedules as required.

• Certifies aircraft as airworthy in compliance with Ministry of Transport and applicable aviation regulatory standards.

• Maintains accountability for shop tools, runway equipment, maintenance vehicles, and ground support equipment.

• Carries out other related technical and supervisory duties as assigned.
